Hey! I am a final year Interaction Design student at Belfast School of Art and I have been playing around with an idea for my final year project and thought who better to get feedback from!

This is the imaginary pitch:

The process of ‚learning‘ art can be overwhelming, time consuming and deflating. Many people are left feeling like they are „just not artistic.“ I believe this is a problem AR could solve – empowering artists everywhere to hone their skills. The AR glasses overlay tutorials and advice into your art creation environment accelerating the learning process through real world experience and real time advice educated by AI.
The AI advice is educated by art fundamentals such as shape, form, colour (the science of aesthetics) and tutorial creators‘ key points to help beginner’s build a base. Over time the glasses learn each person’s personal art style and tweaks advice accordingly.
The AR glasses come with a companion app for finding inspiration, partaking in our community of artists and sharing/selling art work.

This is just an idea – not a reality (will be mocked up to prototype level.)

I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the viability of a product like this? Do you think skills could be cultivated this way? Do you think only beginner artists‘ would benefit from the AI advice and community of artists? Do you think artists‘ need a dedicated community to share their full processes/ask questions/find each other?

As an artist myself, I personally think it would be a super cool aid to learning the basics, and trying new styles – even for established artists, a small hint has never hurt. I think online tutorials are great but it’s often so hard to see when and where you are going wrong. What’s your thoughts?

P.s. I will be putting a lot of thinking time into cognitive overload from advice, ensuring the glasses gives positive feedback and encourage, tackling harassment on the community app, and removing the concept of ‚likes‘ as each individual’s art and processes are so much more than 145 Instagram Hearts. I want this to be super ethical, fun, and creative.
