I’m interested to know how everyone goes about prototyping there Augmented Reality Experiences! Especially anyone who needs to rapidly create an idea for a client PLUS what are some difficulties you have come across 🙂
I’ve been designing and playing with AR/VR technology for the last three years. During that time I’ve tried out so many tools such as wiARframe, Aero, ProtoAR and the list goes on and on. Personally I’ve found a combination that works well for me (just a note, I work in UX so I’m more adapt at design tools than coding)
Static Prototyping
Photoshop + Figma: I find this combination can give a realistic overview of how an app may look and feel. Photoshop obviously has some powerful 3D Design tools so the assets created there help bring the experience to life to give a look at a real AR experience.
Interactive Prototype
Unity + Vuforia: Sometimes we have those clients that just want „more“. Though static prototyping gives a great picture of how the app feels – they just wish to see how the AR tech really functions. For these scenarios I rapidly throw together a working prototyping in Unity. The great thing about the Unity front-end is you can just drag and drop .PNGs of the UI and create a couple button elements then to link pages if necessary. This allows for more focus on the AR functionality which can be time consuming.
