Hi, I know there are several posts on whether to learn AR or not, generally people support the yes with the market growth it is having and the constant technological advances it is receiving, while on the other side, people support the no argue that AR applications have a limited/irrelevant use case in most cases, likewise it is downplayed due to its constant use as just „an additional feature“ of a bigger solution.

In my case, I was considering learning AR but I am very unsure about it, especially due to the fact that the demand for AR developers doesn’t seem to be as much as one might believe, for example, even if you look for AR jobs in a large company most of the offers are not for development or design but for other sectors such as manufacturing, marketing, management, etc. in the AR/VR field.

I did a 4 years university degree related to computer science, but after being constantly hours and hours with pure code I got overwhelmed and decided to put it aside to learn 3D for 1 year and a half, now in the current situation of wanting to mix programming and 3D design I get to make this post, one of my problems is that I am financially tight (happy and healthy but without luxuries) and my phone is not compatible with ARCore so I have an additional barrier, my main goal would be to develop AR Solutions in general, I considered focusing on learning JavaScript + Three.js for a WebAR/WebXR approach but I’m concerned about the fact that almost any web developer can already do it as an extra knowledge so it could be a very long way in an field not yet standardized or C# for a mobile AR approach, in this case my phone being low end will make it difficult for me to develop. maybe I should just not learn AR and I should focus on something else?

Thank you for taking the time to read, I know that the post was long and messy but I wanted to cover a little of several points without making it so heavy, this is the best AR community I know where I could ask for advice and I would really appreciate your opinion.

There is this chessboard shaped platform in a park near where u live …I’ve been thinking of making an app to play chess using AR there …but i can’t think of a way to make it easily trackable for the phone

It’s about 1.5×1.5 meters and 50 cms above the floor

I saw a demonstration of Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 and the people testing it were using their real hands to manipulate virtual objects and I think that’s really awesome, but it seems like it’s not something possible to do for an independent AR developer. Did you guys make that kind of thing?
