Do we really need AR and could it be a bad thing?
I have mixed feelings about the recent Facebook Connect event where Facebook announced more details on their approach to AR. I've been fascinated by the potential of XR for years now and have been developing concepts since 2016. However I've recently been thinking about the negative side effects of technology despite its benefits. Is XR just the an idea being pushed by the big players since phone sales are stalling? Outside of some good use cases in the Enterprise do we really need always on Glasses? Could this lead to increased anxiety and diminished presence and mindfulness. Give me some compelling reasons why we need AR on our faces. The Facebook demo cited being able to find my keys, identify a red light when crossing a road. Is that it are those the best use cases? What are a pair of glasses going to do that is 10x better than what I already have? I'm not a luddite I want to love this technology as I've staked a lot on it. Maybe I'm jaded after Magic Leap and many other non staters. Does anyone else feel the same and if not tell me why you are optimistic?!
