Is it possible to send 3D files for easy viewing in AR / VR?
Okay so this will be very vague but I am mostly just wondering if something like this is even possible. I believe it is possible, but maybe not as straightforward as I'd hope.
I am using a program called Fusion 360 for simple modeling (I realize it's not quite a "modeling" software but it does allow 3D renders and I have access to this through my work so I thought I'd ask this question.
Basically what I am trying to do with multiple test runs is being able to "give" people a copy of a 3D model I create in Fusion 360. I believe the files types are .obj
So as a simple example, I have a model of a pencil, and I would like to be able to send the model to somebody to view (and as an extent, interact with) on their phones, tablets, or computers. I was hoping to be able to send someone the file to view without using a program like Fusion 360. Just to be able to "open" the file as a "view only" type of thing. My plan was to send this to people who do not actually have a modeling/3D/rendering program like Fusion 360 or Maya, for example.
I can try my best to go through the process of making it happen, so I'm not really looking for a tutorial, although that would also be appreciated if anyone has some steps I could take. I am mostly just seeing if this is possible (?)
I am probably talking in circles and repeating myself, but basically I would like to be able to send the 3D model to my friend, for example, and have him be able to view the 3D model of the pencil on his phone; and also be able to rotate, zoom, and manipulate the model. Not edit. Just view and move around the screen of his phone.
I was playing around with simple 3D viewer apps on my own phone, and I was able to send .obj files to my phone and open them in the app. It lets me do exactly what I am talking about, BUT the model is not colored, it is just the default grey color that most models start with. I have not found a way to transfer textures and colors with the file. I also would LOVE to find a way to send people the file of the pencil WITHOUT having them download a third-party app to view it. I may be wrong, but as I understand this is not possible yet since VR/AR usually require some sort of external app.
Similar mechanics Pokemon Go, that works through the camera on your phone. The Pokemon that you can see in the real world through your camera lens, that would be the pencil I am using as an example, although the magic of that experience happens through the Pokemon app, and not in the actual phone.
Please excuse my rambling. This is just an idea I would like to play around with and I'm not really sure how to explain it so I tried to simplify the idea. Also thank you to anyone who reads all this in advance.
Mike
