People who work with augmented reality, can it be used to construct a world around you similar to VR, but using the real world?

Like if I have a corridor in VR, using say, a VIVE, I can't walk too far forward as I'll hit something. But could AR be used to create the world instead, using your real world as a basis for surfaces?

What would be the challenges of doing this? Would markers need to be reinvented?

Etc.
