The AR project that never was. Possible resurrection with trusted development.
Circa 2017- (Wpg/MB)
Back in the day, after dropping out of college I was able to land a Job at a early emerging tech company by a prominent up and coming entrepreneur. Young and ambitious he and his 3 man team built up a custom filter company that went global and now he is on to bigger and better things. I am very proud at my time there, I was able to build a cool portfolio of work.
Because I am a Digital media designer majored in 3D animation, I used my skills to build a department of my own. I was given the task to create a R&D team, looking into developing "something" to do with AR.
I thought about it hard with my VR team who later left to build their own stuff, but I was able to convince a couple of devs from our local game jam to be hired.
With me and one other amazing programer I came up with the idea of a AR shooter that was so easy a grandma can play it on the toilet. A single tap game where you just needed to point your camera and shoot.
The idea would be to show the capability of AR apps in a fun interactive way that would help kids and others move about instead of sitting on the couch playing Candy crush or other passert ime apps.
This would later become prominent as the pitch for the idea was well recieved. My partner and I would build a working prototype and with Couple new hires, I would able to complete a working app for apple (first ARkit release) in under the deadline by a month ahead of the original roll out. I was extremely happy and proud at what I was able to accomplish with just a handful of people, with my original idea.
However after making a quick other game app, we switched to instead making AR filters and because of this, the company decided to let go of the R&D team. I was devastated because we would of been the first action shooter in the new AR market, but the "gods" at be didn't allow for this flourish. Instead they would dangle the "possiblity" of release to keep me complacent and stay working on their stuff.
Being their sole AR designer , while they clouted they have a "team", I created works that would help elevate the company to new heights, Disney, Anderson Paak just to name a few clients.
While every other time I would request to be handed or upload the game to the app stores.. they always said not yet. I should of left but I wanted the work. But the sad thing, I still think it would be a hit.
If anyone wants, I have the APK with credited source for it and want to release on my own since after being acquired by a marketing firm they have done nothing with it. It is 2021 and not a single word about it being used is out there. The new boss was pretty rude and I feel would be a dick about releasing it on my own. I know they won't say anything until it does go big, which sucks a lot because I really don't believe they care about it at all. But they have a air about them that they like to own so they can say they own without the possibility of doing Anything with the project I worked on from the ground up.
I want to just release it and take ownership and see where it goes, not really caring if I have to fight for it. But alas, I am not a developer.im a producer, a team lead, a Art director and foremost A 3D generalist. I'm hoping I can find some help here to help get this out there. Right now you can download the APK only from my portfolio website on Android.
If anyone would like to help me, I want fix a few things, add credit and release it with everyone who helped to be featured. The app the could've been, and could be.
Please check it out and tell me what you think, it will be found in my portfolio, under Table Top Zombies.
Shoot a email if interested in working with me.
