Yup, this is as cool as it sounds, plus the pilot looks freakin' bad-ass with his HMD set-up. We took a high performance FPV (first-person-view) drone, that's piloted using a special HMD that allows the pilot to see what the front-facing camera on the drone sees. We slapped some 360 cameras and made some custom IMUs to capture the motion data. Then we played that all back on a super expensive, high quality motion platform (what they use in motion simulators for airplanes).
Yes, it was as awesome as it sounds. It's COMPLETELY different then the motion based rides you may have tried at a VR LBE arcade. It's sort of the difference between listening to a mp3 on a Zoom vs a high quality analog recording on a McIntosh with Avalon Acoustics (I don't really know what that would be like, I listen to Spotify on my iPhone like everyone else. ;) ).
