I guess this is sort of a way to "cheat" augmented reality but its a thought I've had in my head for a bit now.
Obviously mobile VR exists and works decently as a quick and cheap entry into VR so why can't we use the same technology to create AR? My thought is that if you can show the phones camera through a VR display and put the phone into something like Google Cardboard couldn't you simply overlay things on top of the display?
Its not really true augmented reality because what you're seeing is entirely virtual but the environment is a feed from actual reality.
