What’s the best way to make an app to virtually try glasses?

If you have the 3D object for the glasses, do you just need to use ARKit/ARCore to scan someone’s face and then that’s it?

Has anyone heard of or tried Ditto? They supposedly make their own tech for understanding facial geometry to do glasses try ons, but I don’t understand how existing solutions aren’t good enough. I also tried their solution on the Bose website and it didn’t seem very good.

𝟭) 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀, with high animatability and quick turnaround, are great for content that requires a lot of interactivity like training simulators, games & gamified content, if you are willing to compromise on Fidelity & Immersiveness.

𝟮) 𝟯𝗗 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 are great for high-end immersive content that requires unique characters in AR/VR which can’t be captured from reality. This requires expertise and hard-work to create, but is a great solution to create designs specific to your use-case.

𝟯) 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟯𝗗 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 was the go-to method to bring people to AR/VR until volumetric video came. Animating the scanned model without a team of experts looks artificial/uncanny. Good for long interactive applications with someone specific where volumetric still doesn’t apply.

𝟰) 𝟮𝗗 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 can be used when you have a low budget but very specific requirements in terms of the person. Also used to depict people in the far background. Not ideal for AR/VR experiences because as soon as the user moves, the immersiveness will be lost.

𝟱) 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 is the best if your AR/VR content is focused on humans (say you need to bring a celebrity/sports star to your content). You can capture in a full-3D immersive way, raising human emotions and allowing to truly communicate. Ideal for pre-recorded sequences than those that need to be re-animated… but getting there!

AR exhibition created by RISD students – IntAR 2020

Credit for the portal implementation as walk-in picture frames goes to https://github.com/andrewzimmer906/PocketPortalVR (slightly modified). The exhibition space, the Grand Gallery in the RISD Museum, was recreated from a laser scan. The animated style matched paintings on the walls were made with https://deepart.io/

The students had no prior experience with Unity, and had less than 2 months to learn the necessary basics in a quickly cobbled together course held on Zoom. Would be nice to read what you guys think about it.
